{"id":293,"date":"2012-09-08T21:56:51","date_gmt":"2012-09-09T04:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/?page_id=293"},"modified":"2024-03-05T14:25:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T21:25:48","slug":"home-raid","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/?page_id=293","title":{"rendered":"Home Raid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/inside4224a.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-299\" title=\"inside4224a\" src=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/inside4224a.bmp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over the years I have become somewhat of a digital pack rat.\u00a0 I started with a simple setup consisting of 4 300GB drives attached to an adaptec raid card running raid 5.\u00a0 When that ran out of space I added an additional 5 500GB hard drives and proceeded to fill those.\u00a0 But a lack of raid resulted in a large loss of data one day.<\/p>\n<p>It became clear to me that I need a lot more storage, more redundancy from drive failure, better throughput and something that could give me some bragging rights.<\/p>\n<p>The solution was to build a large raid box with TONS of storage using multiple mirrored raid 5 arrays.\u00a0 To do this I purchaced a Norco 4224 case and equiped it with the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1000 Watt power supply<\/li>\n<li>Dual CPU Xenon Processor motherboard w\/procs<\/li>\n<li>16GB of Ram<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.ca\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816116025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 3ware 9500S raid cards (12 Sata\u00a0channels each)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>All required 8087 -&gt; Sata cables<\/li>\n<li>Replacement (Silent) fans<\/li>\n<li>12 1.5TB hard drives<\/li>\n<li>12 2TB hard drives<\/li>\n<li>Server 2008 R2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0Once completed this setup ran for a few years before i managed to fill it up and then require more space.\u00a0 The solution I came up with was to add another Norco 4224 with an additional 24 3TB drives running off a new raid controller located in the previously configured server.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_0951.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"IMG_0951\" src=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_0951-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>This expansion consisted of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ncix.com\/products\/?sku=55462&amp;vpn=RPC%2D4224&amp;manufacture=Norco%20Technologies%20Inc%2E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A new Norco 4224 case to hold 24 more HDD's<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.memoryexpress.com\/Products\/MX29539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">800 Watt power supply (dont have to run a motherboard)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitmicro.com\/global\/pe-2sd1-r10-p-9375.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A small PCI-E board to run the SAS expander<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hardforum.com\/showthread.php?t=1484614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HP SAS expander (2 16GB channels in 6 out)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pc-pitstop.com\/sas_cables_adapters\/AD8788-2.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2x External to internal 8087 plates<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pc-pitstop.com\/sas_cables_adapters\/8787-05M.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8x 8087 cables<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.memoryexpress.com\/Products\/MX36259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3x new 120mm fans<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcdirect.net\/servlet\/Detail?no=258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new 120mm fan plate<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.memoryexpress.com\/Products\/MX40404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24 3TB HDD's<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pc-pitstop.com\/sas_cables_adapters\/8888-1M.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2x External 8087 cable to connect up to the other 4224<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Raid Card\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redbooks.ibm.com\/abstracts\/tips0740.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBM Raid card that supports multipath and SAS expanders (to go into other 4224)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2port88to87.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"2port88to87\" src=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2port88to87.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both of these cases are rack mounted in my basement and a run 24x7.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_09541.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-303\" title=\"IMG_0954\" src=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_09541-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_09541-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadiangeek.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_09541-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p>**2024 update, things may have gotten a little out of hand....  This is only one of the 2 racks \ud83d\ude42  each of the 24 drive chassis is setup differently.  One is using TrueNas, One is using Unraid, One is Raid 6 using LSI cards, the last one is using Drive Bender on server 2018.
